CURE IS BETTER THAN PREVENTION
Rather than be afraid of being near water, or keeping your kids from pool parties. Teach them how to swim right might just decrease the number of drowning incidents from happening since private pools do not have lifeguards.
Pool incidents in Singapore are on the rise with one in 10 cases of children in submersion incidents led to drowning death. Pre-school age children are most vulnerable and the highest occurrence was in private pools with the data reflecting that more than *76 per-cent of those with submersion injuries were children aged six years and below.
"It only takes a split-second for someone to lose their child, Drowning deaths can occur within minutes and even if the child survives, there may be permanent brain damage," said Dr Arif Tyebally, Deputy Head and Consultant, Department of Emergency Medicine, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
