Baby Swimming Teacher Training by Inspire Mum & Baby

Baby Swimming Teacher Training

The Birthlight Asia Teacher Training Course for Baby Swimming is a five day accelerated course that imparts baby swimming practices for babies 3 to 18 months.

Upon successful completion of the five day course, participants will receive The Birthlight Baby Swimming Teacher’s certification which entitles them to teach as probational baby swimming instructors.

Probational teachers will be awarded the full teaching qualification to be baby swimming instructors upon completion of their course assignments.

What is in the Birthlight Asia Teacher Training Course?

This course combines Birthlight’s Baby Swimming Level 1 and Baby Swimming Level 2 into a five day accelerated course.

Part 1 imparts Birthlight’s internationally acclaimed baby swimming practices in a supportive and friendly atmosphere of water parenting:

·         relaxed holds and relaxed floats

·         swimming with babies

·         gentle approaches to submersion

·         progressive unaided propulsion

The result is that bonding between parent and baby is enhanced and the relaxed flow of the practices enhances communication.

The course throws light on the opposition between enforced conditioning for the sake of life saving skills or submersion and gentler methods that free the innate potential of each child for swimming.

Part 2 focuses on babies 9 to 18 months and the dynamics of parent-baby pairs in baby swimming classes.

Who is the Birthlight Asia Teacher Training Course for?

This course is highly recommended for all qualified swimming teachers.

We also accept applicants without swimming qualifications, particularly if they have experience with babies.

In addition:

·         Applicants should be able to swim 25 metres comfortably without the use of swimming aids and be confident in submerging themselves.

·         A CPR qualification is also highly recommended.

What qualification is gained on this course?

On completion of Part 1 of the course, participants receive a Certificate of Training that entitles them to teach towards their case studies as probational teachers, valid for one year. On satisfactory completion of their course assignments, probational teachers gain the Certified Birthlight Baby Swimming Teacher qualification (Level 1).

On successful completion of Part 2 of the course and the Level 2 practical assessment, participants obtain the qualification of Certified Birthlight Teacher in Baby Swimming Level 2.

The Birthlight Baby Swimming Teacher’s certification at Level 2 is the full teaching qualification for participants to be baby swimming instructors.

In addition, participants are eligible for STA membership by taking a STA conversion exam for a fee during the course.

*STA is the world’s largest independent swimming teaching and lifesaving organisation with more than a million members and located in over 30 countries worldwide.

How is this course assessed?

This course is tutor assessed by means of a practical at the end of the course.

Who developed the course?

Birthlight is the original training provider of Baby Swimming in the UK and around the world.

Underlying the Birthlight courses is the conviction that a lifelong love of water and enjoyment of swimming are best generated by:

·         confident and loving handling of babies in water

·         swimming with babies

·         imparting gentle progressive methods towards unaided swimming, without ever resorting to forceful conditioning.

The inspiration for Birthlight’s gentle yet dynamic approach to baby swimming comes from Amazonian forest people with whom Françoise Freedman lived as an anthropologist. Her swimming background stimulated her interest in the joy of water that forest people experienced daily as families and also in the ways that children playfully taught younger siblings how to swim.

Birthlight infant aquatics courses bring together principles of body balance in water, swimming teaching techniques, research on the teaching of water safety skills for babies and the positive effects of joyful parent-baby interaction on overall child development.

Birthlight techniques are at the forefront of international approaches to baby swimming. Françoise received the prestigious Virginia Hunt Award in 2009 (World Aquatic Baby Children Association).

Birthlight courses have been developed with contributions by Birthlight Infant Aquatics tutors Amanda Gawthorpe, Shawn Tomlinson, Phil Geary and Julia de Lucchi.

All practices taught are consistent with research developments in infant physiology and infant psychology and with technical advances in swimming. Our programme blends enjoyment, safety and systematic foundations for swimming in interactive practices for parent/infant pairs. The focus is on the parent as much as on the baby.

Françoise’s book ‘Water Babies’ (Anness 1999) is now in its 6th edition, available in Spanish, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, French and Russian. Birthlight training materials are constantly updated.
